Halfway up the northern coast of Ærø is the city of Ærøskøbing boasting two harbours.

The former commercial harbour can become quite crowded during the summer. There are a few mooring posts though most boats berth along the jam-packed quays, filled with many vessels berthing alongside each other. The harbour is extremely cosy and close to town.

On the harbour-front you will find the fishmongers serving both freshly caught and smoked fish. You can eat there or take it with you to eat on your boat. Remember to visit the old shipyard, which often has exhibitions and activities to offer.

The harbour is bustling during summer. The ferry berth is close to the harbour, large wooden ships tend to moor towards the evening, and now and again a fishing boat calls at the harbour. Occasionally, a cargo vessel stops by, and more frequently, passenger ships anchor outside the harbour sending their passengers ashore.

The harbour is equipped with modern shower and toilet facilities as well as an old white cooking house – considered to be of cultural heritage – where you can do your barbecuing. There is electricity and water supplies available along each quay.

The other option is the marina, on your starboard side when approaching Ærøskøbing. The modern and well-equipped marina offers nice service buildings, a playground, and some barbecue huts – and it’s close to the town.

Recently, the harbour has been expanded with some additional berths; a new slipway has been established as well as an angling area with huts and drying ground.

Live service. In both harbours you will encounter a rare occurrence – a real living assistant harbour master collecting the harbour fee, ever ready for a friendly chat or to answer any questions the 13,000 sailors visiting Ærøskøbing each year may have.

The fairy-tale town of Ærøskøbing. The rough cobblestone pavement on the winding streets lined by old well-kept houses with peculiar features make Ærøskøbing truly something else. The town was originally established in the early Middle-Ages and recently celebrated its 750th anniversary. Many of the town’s houses are unconditionally preserved, and the town as a whole is subject to a preservation plan with guidelines for its development.

Shopping. Ærøskøbing has nice grocery options, and you can also satisfy your shopping urge in the small shops selling peculiar arts and crafts, clothes and souvenirs.

Take your time, look at the quaint houses, enjoy the atmosphere, and buy an ice-cream cone or a draught beer in the cosy surroundings. If you go exploring outside the town centre, you will find many odd paths and alleyways where you may encounter a surprise or two.

The town museums tell the story of the centuries when shipping and trade were the primary occupations in this market town – besides the inland farming. The exhibition of bottle ships made by “Bottle Peter” is an absolute must-see.

Vesterstrand with the vividly coloured beach huts and a child-friendly beach is only a few minutes walk from the town and the harbour.

Free bus. If you want to get around Ærø, you have the advantage of the world’s cheapest buses – they are free and depart on an hourly basis.

Ærø guarantees you sunshine, tailwind and plenty of pleasant holiday memories.
